What did Singaporeans
eat during WWII?

Thank You!

The idea for this project came about during the Covid lockdown when small food shortages occurred. I couldn't find my usual chicken stock cubes in any supermarket. This led me to wonder: How did our forefathers survive during WWII when they had limited access to food?

Approaching WWII survivors to tell their stories was an exercise in sensitivity as it involved asking people to recall the most traumatic years of their life. Consequently, all the individuals interviewed here were first approached by a trusted intermediary, such as a relative or a familiar staff member from an elderly care centre. The majority of the people interviewed here were from two key organisations - Montfort Care (Goodlife Makan) and Lion Befrienders.

I am very grateful to both Montfort Care (Goodlife Makan) and Lion Befrienders. The staff members gently approached the senior citizens under their care and then arranged the interview sessions with their consent. They also acted as translators during the interviews, and the bond between the staff and the senior citizens shone through during these sessions.

Most of all, I'm extremely grateful to the senior citizens who were willing to share their stories with me. May we never forget their courage and be inspired by their resilience.

In addition, I'd like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the National Heritage Board for partially funding this project through the Minor Project Grant.

Finally, thank you, dear reader, for browsing through this website. I hope it leaves a lasting impression on you. If you'd like to connect with me or share your thoughts, please do drop a message via my social media links or via the contact form below.
